John D. Caputo is one of the most influential contemporary continental philosophers of religion. After proposing the “idea of the death of God” and the decline of religion in the modern period, he examines the possibility of the “return of religion” through deconstructive post-metaphysical philosophy in the postmodern era. Interestingly, the idea of the return of religion has even been welcomed by some secular thinkers. Caputo greatly benefits from Derrida’s philosophical thoughts in achieving his goal. Using the descriptive-analytical method, the present library study addresses the central components of Derrida’s thoughts - which have had a profound impact on Caputo’s theological approach - such as “deconstruction”, “negation of the metaphysics of presence”, “event” and “religion without religion”. Finally, a critical examination of deconstructive philosophy and theology shows that this approach faces several challenges, including “relativism,” “extreme interpretivism,” “faithism,” and “religious antirealism”
