Kierkegaard distinguishes between external (āfāqī) and internal (anfusī) reasons in matters of religious faith. He considers the nature of faith as something inward, whose main foundation is human will, and presents Christian faith as paradoxical. By dividing the ways to truth into external and internal paths, he deems external reasons unreliable on the path of religious faith and considers them undesirable; in contrast, he regards internal reasons, in which human will plays a vital role, as the proper path to faith. However, from the perspective of Transcendent Philosophy (Ḥikmat al-Mutaʿāliya), although faith as an ultimate reality also has an inner dimension and, as a voluntary matter, originates from human will, it is not confined to the inner dimension alone. Based on the philosophical-theological principles of Ṣadr al-Mutaʾallihīn and 'Allāmah Miṣbāḥ Yazdī, Kierkegaard's statements regarding the unreliability of external reasons are subject to various problems. In their view, faith begins with the inner path and is reinforced by the outer path.
