This article is dedicated to examining and critiquing Mohammad Ali Amir-Moezzi's reading concerning the origin and development of the doctrine of Imamate in early Shiʿism. The central issue of the research is the evaluation of the validity and coherence of three of his claims in this regard: first, the influence of pre-Islamic cultural and religious backgrounds—particularly Iranian elements—on the doctrine of Imamate; second, the historical crystallization of Imamate in the form of the "religion of ʿAlī" (dīn-i ʿAlī) as the initial nucleus of Shiʿism; and third, the hypothesis of a transition from "esoteric Shiʿism" to "rational-theological Shiʿism" in the fourth century AH. This study, employing a descriptive-critical approach, while accurately representing Amir-Moezzi's viewpoint, critiques its evidence. The findings indicate that the adaptationist interpretation of the origin of Imamate lacks sufficient historical substantiation; the concept of the "religion of ʿAlī" does not imply an independent belief system; and the dichotomization between esoteric Shiʿism and rational Shiʿism is inconsistent with the trajectory of Shiʿi intellectual development. Accordingly, the article concludes that the doctrine of Imamate is rooted in a revelatory context and Islamic texts, and its historical developments cannot be regarded as indicative of a substantial transformation or a fundamental rupture in the doctrinal identity of Shiʿism.
